Rum-Broiled Grapefruit

Broil a grapefruit – If you’ve never done this before, you are seriously missing out.

Grapefruit is good but broiled grapefruit is Awesome.

The sugars caramelize and the flesh gets a little warm and gooey and it’s a sweet, tangy, brûléed masterpiece for your tastebuds.


  • 2 pink or red grapefruit, halved crosswise
  • ¼ cup dark rum
  • ⅓ cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla sugar

Decorate with 4 stemmed maraschino cherries.


Heat the oven broiler.
Trim the ends of grapefruit halves so they sit flat when upright; transfer to a baking sheet cut side up.
Run a knife around edges and between segments of grapefruit to loosen them.
Brush 1 tbsp. rum over each half and sprinkle each with about 1½ tbsp. sugar. Dust with cinnamon and vanilla sugar;
Place under a broiler for 5-6 minutes until the brown sugar is bubbly and beginning to brown and caramelize.
Remove from oven. Let cool for a minute. Eat while still warm.
